PELHAM — Newport wrestlers picked up a pair of victories in a quad meet against Pelham, Bishop Guertin and Spaulding on Saturday.
The Tigers downed Pelham, 36-30 and short-handed Spaulding, 54-6 while bowing to Division II power Bishop Guertin, 68-12.
“Pelham’s numbers are similar to ours so we knew going into the dual it was going to be a close match. It was back and fourth all the way up to 182 pounds and we needed a win from Gavin Lovely in order to win the dual,” Coach Cole Boone said.
Lovely wrestled a tough opponent and was able to come through with the early pin, securing the team victory for Newport.
Boone said Bishop Guertin has a full lineup for the first time in several years along with a great freshman class and also has tough wrestlers across the board.
Spaulding was down a few wrestlers Saturday so there more forfeits in that dual than anticipated, according to Boone.
“I was happy to see Ben Gallagher win our sole head-to-head match in this dual. He’s been working hard all year long to get better and it’s nice to see it’s coming together for him.”
In the Pelham dual there were double forfeits at 106, 113 and 220 pounds. Newport winners by forfeit were Jordan Warburton, 120; Mike Wilkinson, 138 and Cameron Hall, 285.
Newport winners were Josh Sharron, 126, pin, 2:14; Dylan Palmer, 152, pin 1:10 and Lovely, 182, pin, 1:42.
Against Bishop Guertin Newport had two winners, Wilkinson by forfeit and Sharron at 126, pin, 1:02.
Newport picked up eight victories by forfeit against Spaulding along with Gallagher’s win at 170 by a pin, 0:39.
Spaulding had one win via forfeit at 285 and there were double forfeits in four other classes.
