Newport Winter Carnival events
The 102nd Newport Winter Carnival will be held from Thursday, Feb. 8 to Sunday, Feb. 11 with events throughout Newport. For a Newport Carnival Button, see a Carnival Queen Contestant or a Newport business.
Thursday, Feb. 8
9 a.m. — Pickleball Tournament at 9 a.m. at the Wheeler Gym
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — American Legion Table Tennis Tournament at Newport Rec. Prizes.
4 p.m. — Library Arts Center’s Gingerbread House Project is at 15 Main St., drop-ins welcome, parental supervision required. Call (603) 863-3040.
4 p.m. — Kids Soccer on Ice on the Newport Common.
5:45 p.m. — The Torch Lighting Ceremony is at the Little Common. Join the Carnival Queen Contestants for this event.
6 p.m. — The official Winter Carnival Dinner at the Old Courthouse Restaurant, music and dinner. Reservations required, call (603) 863-8360.
6 p.m. — The Uncorked Painting Class is held at the Library Arts Center, 15 Main St. Register in advance. The cost is $20, call (603) 863-3040.
Friday, Feb. 9
3:30 p.m. — Ice skating games on the common with medals awarded.
5 to 7 p.m. — The Black & White Art Gallery opening at the Library Arts Center. For more information, call (603) 863-3040.
5:30 to 7 p.m. — Newport High School Boys Basketball vs. Fall Mountain
4 p.m. — Kids’ Hot Shot Bball Challenge and Free Throw Contest at Newport Rec.
7 p.m. — The 102 Winter Carnival Pageant at the Newport Opera House. Tickets cost $17:50. Call (603) 863-2412.
10 p.m. to 12 p.m. — Midnight Ice Skating on the Common. Parental supervision is required.
Saturday, Feb. 10
All day — Ice Skating on the Common
7 to 10 a.m. — Newport Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast at the Stone Church on the Common. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
8:30 a.m. — Softball Tournament on Snow at the Newport High School softball field. Call Ray Shep at (603) 306-6007.
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Games, food and live music on the common. Events include the Dozen Donut Challenge, Wife Carry, Turkey Bowling and more.
10:30 a.m. — An Easter Egg Hunt on the Common. Prizes.
11 a.m. — The Winter Carnival Parade from Newport High School to Elm Street sponsored by the Newport Firefighters Association. To enter, call Chris Smith at (603) 558-1884.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Newport Montessori Taco to Go on the Common. $5.
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Kitewing and Nordic Skating on the Common.
12 to 2 p.m. — Free horse-drawn wagon rides.
12 p.m. — The Axe Man Challenge sponsored by Arthur Heino and family. Prizes.
1 p.m. — Life-size Candyland game on the common

2 p.m. — The Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament at the Newport Rec.

Country Dance at the Moose Lodge
A Country Dance will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Newport Moose Lodge. The All-Country Band will perform. Admission is $5. The public is welcome.

— Bingo for Books will be held at 3 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12. Join in for a few rounds of bingo and win books to take home.
— Brown Bags and Books, a book discussion group, will be meet at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6. The group will discuss “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Gilman. Copies of the book are available for loan from the library.
—Toddler Story Time will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21 and Feb. 28. This is a lapsit story time for babies and toddlers from birth through age 2. The group will sing songs, rhymes and read a couple of books.
— Preschool Story Time will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21 and Feb. 28. This is a preschool story time for children ages 2 through 6. The group will read books, sing songs and do a simple craft.
— Winter Carnival Parade Last-Minute Building will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. Join the library staff for any last-minute building and finishing for the library’s float for the Newport Winter Carnival Parade.
—The Newport Winter Carnival Parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. If you are interested in being a part of the library’s float, stop by the library and speak to Moriah Churchill.
—A Valentine’s Day Craft program will be held at 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13. Create a craft for your special person.
— The Writer’s Group for ages 7 through 18 meets from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 14 and Feb. 28. The group plays writing and storytelling, games, eats snacks and try to get some creative writing done
.—The Homeschool Book Group meets at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16. The group will be discussing “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan. Copies of the book are available for loan from the library.
— A Year of the Dog Craft program will be held at 2:30 and 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. According to Chinese astrology, 2018 is the Year of the Dog. Create a craft to celebrate.
—Knitting at the Library will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20. Bring your knitting and join the conversation.
— The Wednesday Night Book Group meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21. The group will discuss “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens. Copies of the book are available for loan from the library.
— Maker Play: Playing with Color for Homeschoolers will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. The group will explore how colors mix and unmix with science experiments and create colorful coffee filter butterflies.
