Local Roundup; Newport girls top Sunapee

The Newport girls hosted Sunapee on Monday as defeated the Lakers, 66-53. It was a strong night for Selena Corona as she netted 18 points for the Tigers that included 3 three pointers. “We had two of our players out with the flu, but we battled and we stepped up and it was a good win for us,” said head coach Ross Dole. Kennedy Pysz contributed for Newport with 12 points while teammates Alexis Hurd and Lacy McNeel each picked up 8 points.

Newport girls are right back on the court on Tuesday as they host Mascoma.

Windsor edges out victory

The Windsor girls basketball team hosted Leland and Gray on Monday and edged out a 47-41 victory. Olivia Rockwood led the scoring with 16 points and Evelyn Page dropped in 14 points. “I felt Leland and Gray wanted it a little more than we did,” said head coach Bruce MacKay. “We were able to get it done and I think us doing a better job on the foul line late in the game was the difference,” he added.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday when they head ti Mt. St. Joseph.

Bellows Falls smokes Woodstock 

The Bellows Falls girls basketball team improved to 12-2 on the season with a blowout win over Woodstock, 64-10. Emily Bazin led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the girls. Bellows Falls girls are back in action on Thursday against Green Mountain.

Springfield girls lose to Hartford 

It was a tough night on Monday for the Springfield girls team as they fell to Hartford, 51-43. “They made foul shots at the end and that was the difference,” said head coach Joe Costello. Haley Purham had 11 points for Springfield in the loss. “We’ve been battling injury, but I’m proud of our role players who have stepped up. We had too many turnovers and we overcame some deficits but just couldn’t finish it,” the coach added.

Springfield will head to Leland and Gray on Thursday.

Green Mountain JV drops tough one 

The Green Mountain Boys JV team fell to 8-3 with 50-41 loss to the Burr and Burton Gold JV team Monday night at Green Mountain. Ty Merrill led the Chiefs with 13 and Sawyer Pippin 9, Dylan McCarthy 8 and Skyler Klezos added 6. Green Mountain will play Windsor on Tuesday in Chester.

Mansfield Nordic Results

This past weekend, Mansfield Nordic Club skier Magdalena Lelito (Milton, VT) earned a first-place finish in the U16 women’s 5km classic Eastern Cup race in Craftsbury, VT. 

 

The Eastern Cup series, presented by the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA), is the highest level of competition for Junior skiers in New England, and is a qualifying series for the Junior National Championships each season. Mansfield Nordic Club athletes had strong finishes in both Saturday and Sunday’s races, with a total of nine top-10 results across all age groups.  

 

Other MNC Top 10 finishers included: 

Ali Priganc (Richmond) – 2 top 10s, Ava Thurston (Waterbury) – 2 top 10s,  Aidan Burt (Huntington), Isaac Freitas-Egan (Brattleboro), Gaelen Kilburn (Burlington)

& Camille Bolduc (South Burlington).
