SPRINGFIELD — “What can I be when I grow up?” Springfield children, all children, think about what work lies ahead. For Judith Nelson, born and raised in Springfield, her interests developed into a lifelong career as a professional graphic artist.
The Springfield Town Library is hosting a display on the Nelson’s work, beginning Feb. 13. Bring children in to see illustrations of Arthur, from the books by Marc Brown, including “Arthur Goes to School.”
Nelson graduated from Springfield High School in 1964 and went to Syracuse University for a degree in illustration. After graduation, she moved to Kansas City to work for Hallmark Greeting Cards. Later she received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design with a concentration in fine arts painting, and eventually her Master’s degree in education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
As a freelance artist, she specialized in licensed character illustration, children’s book illustration, character development, girls’ toy illustration, packaging art, line art, cartoon characters, greeting card illustration and art direction. Nelson’s clients included Hasbro, Mattel, Fisher-Price, Milton Bradley, Disney, Parker Brothers, Random House, Little Brown, Nestle, Hallmark, McGraw Hill, and Unicef.
