Freshman Josh Sharron Most Valuable Wrestler at 16-team Plymouth meet

PLYMOUTH — Newport wrestlers placed fifth in a field of 16 teams in Saturday’s Plymouth Invitational.

Josh Sharron (126 pounds) took first place going 3-0 on the day. He defeated Jeff Marsh of Natick, Mass., High School via technical fall, 19-2.

Sharron was voted on by the coaches as the 2018 Plymouth Invitational Most Outstanding Wrestler.

“Today was a fantastic day for our wrestlers,” said Coach Cole Boone. “Unfortunately we were unable to bring the lineup we are use to having for our dual meets and prior tournaments.”

The six Newport wrestlers that competed wrestled very well and continued to show signs of growth and improvement, Boone said.

Natick finished in first place, Plymouth second, Concord third and Winnisquam fourth.

“All-in-all, to have four place winners on the day is a very encouraging sign as we are only two weeks out from the Divisional State Tournament,” Boone stated.

Other Newport wrestlers who placed were Jordan Warburton, 120 pounds, third place going 3-1 on the day; Dylan Palmer, 152 pounds, third place going 3-1 on the day, and Gavin Lovely, 183 pounds, took second place going 3-1 on the day.

Other Newport wrestlers competing including Marius Edwards, 132 pounds, and Ben Gallagher, 170 pounds.

In a dual meet on Jan. 31, Newport defeated John Stark, 41-23, on Senior Night honoring Keagan Halleck, Matt Hennig and Captain Dylan Palmer.

Newport winners were Gavin Lovely (195) who defeated Jeffrey Johnston by a technical fall, 17-1; Mike Wilkinson (138) defeated Anthony L’Heureux by pin, 1:41, and Dylan Palmer (152) defeated Sean Boisvert by pin, 1:46.

Newport’s Joshua Almstrom lost by technical fall, 17-2, and Ben Gallagher was pinned, 3:17. Newport wrestlers winning by forfeit were Cameron Hall (285); Jordan Warburton, (120); Josh Sharron (126) and Marius Edwards (132).

“Overall I thought this was a great Senior Night. We won the dual meet, had several great exhibition matches and we were able to honor our three seniors,” Boone said.
