Cadence Wheeler Double State Champ sets record for Springfield

On Friday, the Springfield Indoor Track and Field Club traveled to UVM’s Gutterson Fieldhouse for the Vermont Div. 2 State Meet. This year only the top 12 seeds for each event qualified, so having 6 of 10 make it was an achievement in itself.

Sophomore Cadence Wheeler headlined the night for Springfield, winning both the Boys’ Long Jump (19’7.75”), and Triple Jump(40’ 5.5”) Championships, and setting the new Div. 2 State Record in TJ.

Results from this meet will be combined with those from the Div. 1 State Meet Friday to determine the top 6 overall qualifiers for the New England Championships. Unofficial Div. 1 results show Cadence’s LJ as 2nd overall among both divisions, so he will be representing VT at the Reggie Lewis center in Boston March 3.

His teammate, junior Deacon Watson, who finished 3rd in boys’ Shotput with a PR of 40’4.5”, also qualified as 4th overall in Vermont.

Sophomore Maxim Leninski took a 5th place ribbon in the boys’ 55m dash(7.08), and finished 8th in the 300m dash(41. 40). Captain Christopher Gurney placed 6th in the Triple Jump(36’ 7.75”), and finished 10th in 300m. Sophomore Austin Mcfadden also finished 11th in the boys’ 600m(1:46.55), and 12th in the 1500m(5:18.79), and 9th-grader Molly Leonard finished 12th in the girls’ 600m with a PR of 1:56.55.

This earned them the #3 seed behind Randolph and South Burlington the two top teams in the state.

The Jackets faced #2 seed South Burlington in the first round and came out strong in game one winning 182-113. Missed spares would find them losing 150-128 and 138-122 the next two games and sending them to the consolation round. Windsor then faced #4 seed Oxbow for 3rd place and again the Jacks missed some key spares ultimately losing the best of 3 in bakers match, losing game one 137-128 winning game two 201-150 and losing the rubber game 173-136 to finish 4th on the day.
