SAXTONS RIVER — Colored pencil enthusiasts are invited to open their pencil boxes and explore their creativity in a workshop offered at Main Street Arts, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 17 in Saxtons River. Award-winning colored pencilist Liz Guzynski will lead the Colored Pencil for Everyone workshop.
“I hope to introduce a wide range of people in this area to colored pencil because it’s such a wonderful low-barrier entry into the world of painting and illustration,” she said, although she maintained it is sophisticated enough to stand on its own as a professional art medium.
The reduced fee for the workshop is $40, underwritten by the MSA Art for Everyone scholarship fund. Materials to use and take home are included in the fee.
Guzynski will also offer a six-week Introduction to Colored Pencil Painting class from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning March 6.
Winner of Best in Show and the CIPPY Award at the 20thannual Colored Pencil Society of America exhibition, Guzynski has also won a number of regional and local awards in North Carolina and the Southeast. She has taught literature at the college level and is excited to be able to share her love of colored pencils with others.
She says she has “a very deep toolbox of colored pencil techniques” that she is excited to share with others. She touts the medium’s lack of toxic solvents and necessity for elaborate studio set-ups, plus its “near-therapeutic quality.”
“All you need is a flat surface, a handful of pencils, and paper. It sets and breaks down in an instant; doesn’t have to dry and travels easily,” she says.
