CHESTER — Green Mountain Union High School (GMUHS) is recognizing several alumni for their recent academic and sports achievements.
GMUHS alumni Mack Walton and Ian Kehoe, both of Chester (both Class of 2017), along with Kaitlin Wells (2016) of Cavendish and Chad Leonard (2014) of Chester are being honored for commendable work, according to a school press release.
Walton, a freshman majoring in biology and pre-physical therapy, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester at Clarkson University. Dean’s list students must achieve a minimum 3.25 grade-point average and also carry at least 14 credit hours.
In soccer, Walton made an immediate impact for the Golden Knights during his freshman season, starting 17 games and leading the team with 1,430 minutes of field time. He ranked second on team in points (7) while tying for team lead in assists (3). He was chosen Liberty League All-Star Honorable Mention as one of three Clarkson All-Stars. He recorded an assist in first collegiate game against Wheaton on Sept. 1, 2017, scored the first collegiate goal against Utica College on Sept. 6, and then added his second goal of the season in the following game against Castleton State on Sept. 8. Walton also recorded assists against Ithaca, in September, and Hobart in October. He was chosen Liberty League Rookie of the Week for Sept. 11, and ECAC North Rookie of the Week for Sept. 12, during his two-goal week early in the season.
One of the selections for conference Rookie of the Year, Walton was one of the top freshmen in the league from day one, making an immediate impact in the midfield for the Knights. He finished the season as the team’s second leading scorer with seven points, scoring twice and assisting on three other goals. Walton was frequently called upon to set up the team’s offense on direct kicks and helped Clarkson convert on several occasions.
Kehoe has been named to the Champlain College dean’s list for the fall 2017 semester.
Students on the Dean’s List have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the semester. Kehoe is majoring in Game Production Management.
Wells was recently named to the Castleton University president’s list for the fall semester of the 2017-18 academic year.
To qualify for this highest academic honor, the student must maintain full-time status and a semester grade point average of 4.0
Leonard, along with 75 upper-class students, led more than 250 first-year UVM students on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 as they began their University of Vermont experience through TREK, a unique, seven-day first year enrichment program sponsored by UVM’s Department of Student Life.
Known as TREK leaders, these students provided and maintained a safe, healthy and supportive group atmosphere for their student participants while exploring the expansive outdoor environments of northern Vermont and its neighboring states through both Wilderness and Service TREK programs. TREK is one of the biggest and most diverse new-student, collegiate, community-building programs in the northeast region.
The program offers first-year students diverse experiences and self-directed opportunities to learn about themselves, future classmates and student life at the University of Vermont.
