January Birthday Party included a 60th wedding anniversary

By MARILYN LEDOUX
LUDLOW — Twenty-five people from Ludlow and surrounding towns braved the cool and sunny skies to attend the January Birthday Party on Thursday, Jan. 18. This was a wonderful

first party of the new year, with a party to be held on the third Thursday of every month to follow.

Everyone sang the Happy Birthday Song to Birthday Girl Viola Wynne, followed by a round of applause. Then, with the changing of just a few words, everyone sang a “Happy Anniversary” song, followed by a second round of applause, to Armand and Betty Demers who were celebrating 60 years together this January.

Everyone enjoyed a dinner of sliced ham in raisin sauce, mashed potato, green beans, and a wheat dinner roll. Dessert was a slice of layered carrot cake with white frosting decorated with blue decorations and a white frosting filling with a side of ice cream. The beverage was a choice of coffee, tea, or ice water.

After dinner the Birthday Raffles started. These raffles are a lot of fun with many prizes and a 50/50 raffle for a cash prize.

Dan Churchill told a very funny joke to get everyone in a party mood and when the laughter died down, Churchill gave the ticket jar one more good shake and the fun began.

This month the prizes were two dishes of dark chocolate fudge, several envelopes of meal tickets, two lunches of crackers and soup, a tea sampler with five different types of tea, a gas card, and a host of wrapped mystery gifts, including a hat and glove set.

After all the prizes were awarded, the 50/50 raffle was held. The winner this month was Norman Guy of Ludlow who went home with $40 cash.

You do not have to be from Ludlow to come to the Senior Center. Everyone is welcome. This is a wonderful way to banish the “Winter Blues” before they start, meet new friends and enjoy a good meal in a friendly atmosphere.

The February Birthday party will be held on Thursday, Feb. 15 at The Black River Valley Senior Center, 10 High St. in Ludlow. The menu for the party will be pork and vegetable stew, four-bean salad with red onion, buttermilk biscuits, and pineapple tidbits. Dessert will be a slice of birthday cake and a side of ice cream.

Plan to attend this party every month, and before you know it, Spring will be here.
