NEW LONDON — Gladys E. (Long) Fremgen, 97, formerly of Fenwood Commons, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 at Woodlawn Care Center in Newport.
She was born on July 26, 1920 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of James L. and Meta M. (Schnaars) Long. Mrs. Fremgen lived on Long Island, N.Y. until retirement.
She worked for the New York Life Insurance Co. in New York City as a policy writer and then for the State of New York Comp Board in Hempstead, N.Y.
She and her husband moved to Newport, N.H., where they lived for nine years, Springfield, N.H. for 13 years, then back to Newport for seven years, and then to New London in 2005.
On Long Island, Gladys was a Girl Scout Leader and taught Sunday School. In New Hampshire, she volunteered at the Libbie Cass Library in Springfield and served as a ballot clerk for 12 years. She loved animals (especially dogs), nature, reading, sewing and crocheting. She had been a member of the Croydon Congregational Church where she sang in the choir.
Her husband of 69 years, Frank J. Fremgen, died in 2012.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Patrick Barry of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Patricia Fremgen of East Meadow, Long Island, N.Y.; two grandchildren, James and Jennifer; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Denver.
Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London, N.H., on Saturday, May 12 at 1 and a service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Eastman Cemetery, Sunapee, N.H.
