Local Roundup; Springfield tops Twin Valley

The Springfield girls basketball team defeated Twin Valley on Thursday, 58-26. “I thought we set the tone with our defense tonight,” said head coach Joe Costello. Gabby Wardwell led the scoring for Springfield with 14 points. Teammates Hailey Purham netted 13 points and Jessica Cerniglia contributed 11 points. Springfield is back in action on Saturday at Mill River.

Lexie Hamilton Scores 30 in 75-45 Win over Lyndon

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer sophomore Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) tied a career-high with 30 points to lead the Chargers past Lyndon State College, 75-45, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Thursday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 19-5 overall and 14-3 in the NAC. The Chargers will end the regular season on Saturday at Johnson. Lyndon drops to 13-11 overall and 9-8 in the NAC. The Hornets will conclude the regular season at home on Saturday against New England College.

Hamilton shot 11-of-19 from the floor and made 6-of-10 three-pointers. Senior Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) recorded her ninth double-double with 16 points on 7-of-12 and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) added 11 rebounds, six points and four assists.

Lyndon was led by senior Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.). She notched her 23rd double-double of the season with 13 points and an impressive 20 rebounds. She has recorded at least 20 boards four times this season. Freshman Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, N.H.) was the only other Hornet to reach double figures with 10 points.

The first quarter was back and forth for the first five minutes of action as each team shot the ball efficiently. The Chargers held a 15-14 lead with 2:23 left to go and finished the frame with eight-straight points to take a 22-14 lead after one. Hamilton had 11 points in the quarter. Colby-Sawyer scored 12 points in the paint.

The Hornets began the second quarter with a bucket from Hodge and a trey from Poirier to make the game one possession at 22-19. The Chargers turned up the defense and held Lyndon without a field goal for the next five minutes, pushing their lead to 10 in the process. Colby-Sawyer shot 42% in the frame, while Lyndon was just 4-of-17 (23.5%).

Colby-Sawyer increased its advantage in the third quarter with by outscoring Lyndon 20-13. The Chargers made four treys in the stanza, three from Hamilton and one from Mackenzie Buzzell (Lovell, Maine) to go in front 57-36 after 30 minutes.

The home team shot 50% in the fourth (7-14) and held Lyndon to just four makes on 22 attempts to win the quarter 18-9 and take the victory, 75-45.

Colby-Sawyer held a 47-45 edge on the glass. The Chargers shot 45.3% from the floor and 47.4% from beyond the arc, while limiting Lyndon to 26% from the field and 20% from long range.

Colby-Sawyer Defeats Lyndon, 84-74

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men’s basketball team earned an 84-74 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Lyndon State College on Thursday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 15-8 overall and 12-5 in the NAC. The Chargers will play a regular season finale at Johnson on Saturday. Lyndon falls to 2-12 overall and 2-15 in conference play. The Hornets host New England College on Saturday.

Sophomore Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) led Colby-Sawyer with 23 points on 11-of-20 shooting. Sophomore Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) added 22 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, and seven rebounds. Junior Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) was the third Charger in double figures with 12 points. Freshman KJ Synvrit (Miami, Fla.) grabbed seven rebounds.

Lyndon was led by senior Kendrick Mills (Rutland, Vt.). He poured in a game best 24 points on 8-of-14. Freshman Ricky Shuford (Prattville, Ala.) made 7-of-10 from the floor to score 21 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Jahleel Gabriel (Springfield, Mass.) added 12 points on 5-of-7.

The Chargers opened the game on an 8-0 run to force an early Lyndon timeout. Colby-Sawyer increased its lead to 10 (23-13) after a Dana Bean layup at the 12-minute mark. The home team held a comfortable lead throughout the half and was in front by as much as 22 points in the final minute.

Colby-Sawyer scored 20 points off of 11 Lyndon turnovers in the first half and had a 26-15 advantage in rebounding. Coffey scored 17 of his 23 points in the first 20 minutes.

The Chargers’ lead ballooned to 27 midway through the second half after a tip-in from freshman Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas). Lyndon started to slowly chip-away at the lead behind strong shooting from beyond the arc. The Hornets cut the deficit to 10 points after a Shuford layup with 1:30 left to play, but the comeback fell short as the Chargers held on for the double-digit win, 84-74.

Colby-Sawyer outscored Lyndon 42-20 in the paint and outrebounded the Hornets 48-34.
