Newport wrestlers win five of seven matches

WHITEFIELD — Newport wrestlers dropped a 36-26 decision to White Mountains Regional High School Thursday, the final tuneup before the NHIAA Division III State Meet on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Winnisquam Regional High School.

“Even though we suffered a close defeat, having five of the seven wrestlers competing for Newport won their matches and that was a real positive for us,” said Newport Coach Cole Boone.

“Now we need to have a great week of practice and carry that over into the state tournament if we want to see the results we hope for,” Boone added.

Newport winners at White Mountains included Josh Sharron, 126 pounds, pin, 3:27; Marius Edwards, 132 pounds, 11-0; Dylan Palmer, 152 pounds, 16-3, and Gavin Lovely, 182 pounds, pin, 3:25. Josh Almstrom, 145 pounds, won by forfeit.

Kevin Cumane of White Mountains defeated Ben Gallagher of Newport by pin at 3:39 and Stetson Clement defeated Newport’s Cameron Hall by pin at 0:50.

White Mountains won four matches by forfeit. There were double forfeits in three weight classes.
