Following the daytime snowfall on Wednesday, Feb. 7, that left 9 inches of light, powdery snow in many areas, more in others, the weather settled down for the remainder of the week.
It was colder on Friday, Feb. 9th with varied readings. While it got down to nearly 0 in Newport, a Lempster resident reported a low of -7 in that community.
Heading into a busy Saturday filled with events at the 102nd Newport Winter Carnival, the weather was about as good as it could get. There was plenty of snow on the ground and the ice on the Common skating rink was glassy smooth.
Sunday was not exactly a perfect day for the 102nd Newport Winter Carnival. A light rain fell throughout the day, dampening outside activities.
