NEWPORT –  The Yellow Jackets buried 11 three pointers on Thursday night with seven coming in the second half as Newport just couldn’t keep pace with the visitors from Vermont and fell, 76-61. Windsor’s Robert Slocum’s back to back three pointers along with Ryland Richardson’s three ball in the span of 30 seconds gave Windsor a 70-50 lead midway into the final quarter and coasted for the win tonight. “I was happy to hit my open shots tonight and help in the win,” said Slocum after the game as Windsor improved to 13-2 with an old CVL flavored victory.

Newport coach Ethan Jean’s squad has been struggling for wins recently but they matched Windsor bucket for bucket in the first half as the Tigers only trailed 35-33 at the break. The Tigers Cameron Gillespie, Ethan Houde and Keegan Osgood were hot for Newport as the trio had 25 points together while on the Windsor side Seth Balch and Ben Meagher were matching the Tigers scoring with 10 points each by the break. The first half was fast paced with a much more inside physical game being played by both teams, but the second half was totally different.

“We had a better 2nd half on the defensive end and that helped us to get our fast break going,” said Windsor head coach Harry Ladue after the game had ended. Newport still trailed by a single bucket at the six minute mark of the third quarter then Slocum and Frazer went to work from beyond the arc and when Adam Stapleton tipped in an offensive rebound, Windsor’s lead had exploded to 50-38 as the pace was in Windsor’s favor. “We just couldn’t mentally regroup and grind it out after Windsor started to score in bunches,” said Newport coach Ethan Jean. Windsor dropped in 24 points in the 3rd quarter and added 17 more in the final eight minutes to head home with a win as the Windsor press and fast break opportunities just wore the Tigers down.

Newport was led by a solid game from Gillespie who paced all scorers with 20 points, he was followed by Cody Tuegeon who added 10 points. Windsor had five players with double figures and were led by Meagher’s 17. Balch added 14 points while Frazer, Daniel Cardillo and Stapleton chipped in with 12, 10 and 10 points each. Windsor shot 15 for 21 from the line while Newport canned 11 of 16 from the charity stripe.

In JV action, Larry Daugher’s Windsor team downed the Tigers 48-24. John Cook scored 10 points for the Yellow Jackets while Chase Hamilton netted 6 for Newport.
