Local Roundup; Newport wrestling places 3 wrestlers

On Saturday, Newport competed in the NHIAA Division III State Championships against 16 teams. They placed 3 wrestlers on the day.

Dylan Palmer (152 lbs) took 2nd place going 2-1 on the day.

Gavin Lovely (182 lbs) took 2nd place going 2-1 on the day.

Josh Sharron (126 lbs) took 1st place going 3-0 on the day. He defeated Zackary Anderson of Bow High School by a score of 16 – 2.

Other wrestlers competing included  Marius Edwards (132 lbs), Joshua Almstrom (145 lbs), Ben Gallagher (160 lbs), and Matt Hennig (170 lbs). Overall, we finished in 6th place in the team standings. Plymouth finished in 1st place, Bow in 2nd place, White Mountains in 3rd place, Campbell in 4th place, and Pelham in 5th place.

Head coach Cole Boon spoke about the results, “Having 3 of our 7 wrestlers compete in the finals for a State Championship is a great accomplishment. It’s unfortunate that we only managed to win 1 out of the 3 matches, but I’m happy with how Dylan, Gavin, and Josh wrestled all day. To get to the finals of the State Championships is no easy task, so I applaud them for their heart and effort. Josh Sharron becomes only the second freshman in Newport High School’s history to ever win a State Championship in wrestling (Stephan Nix accomplished this in 2013). He looked really good in all 3 of his matches and we look forward to seeing how he fares at the Meet of Champions this coming Saturday.”

Next Saturday, 02/24/2018, Newport will be competing in the Meet of Champions at Nashua High School South. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am.
