CLAREMONT — Following more than two months of searching for a director for the Sugar River Valley Regional Technical Center, Alex Herzog resigned from his school board post Wednesday night to take the school’s helm.

Superintendent Middleton McGoodwin announced to school board members last night that Herzog submitted his resignation from the board upon receiving the nomination. Board members unanimously accepted the resignation before unanimously appointing him to the new position.

Herzog’s term on the school board will remain unfilled until March 13, when new boards members are elected. While his name will appear on the ballot for board reelection, Herzog will not be able to accept any further terms.

Herzog will begin serving as the director shortly before the next school year begins. Salary for the position is $86,898.

The search for a new SRVRTC director began in December after outgoing director Joel Schneid announced his retirement for June 2018. A search committee of relevant stakeholders representing the community’s interests began receiving applications for the job shortly thereafter.

“The committee went through several applications and went through an interview process,” McGoodwin said. “Following that, [Asst. Superintendent] Cory LeClair gave me two candidates… I picked a candidate who I felt was the best fit for our needs.”

Herzog holds a PhD. in Education Leadership from the University of Nevada. Currently, he acts as the Interim Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord.

Both McGoodwin and search committee members unanimously recommended that Herzog take the post, citing his extensive higher education background in working with the Community College System of New Hampshire.

The hiring of a new director will be a vital step in the future of the center, LeClair said last month. Along with Schneid, four of the five current teachers at the school are also set to retire. District administration will look to the new director to conduct to lead the hiring process of the new staff.

“I look forward to his leadership and I look forward to going forward with redesigning our tech center based on the strengths that it has and also based on the vision of where we want our tech center to evolve to meet the needs of this community,” McGoodwin said.
