TILTON — Josh Sharron became only the second freshman in Newport High School history to ever win a State Championship in wrestling on Saturday at Winnisquam High School.
Stephan Nix accomplished this in 2013.
Sharron defeated Zackary Anderson of Bow High School by a score of 16-2 in their championship match at the Division III meet.
“He looked really good in all three of his matches and we look forward to seeing how he fares at the Meet of Champions,” said Newport Coach Cole Boone.
That competition is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24 at Nashua South High School. The matches begin at 9 a.m.
At the NHIAA Division III State Championships Newport had three of its seven wrestlers in the finals. “This is a great accomplishment,” Boone said.
Dylan Palmer (152 lbs.) and Gavin Lovely (182 lbs.) both went 2-1 on the day.
“I’m happy how Dylan, Gavin and Josh wrestled all day. To get to the finals of the State Championship is no easy task, so I applaud them for their heart and effort,” Boone said.
Other wrestlers competing included Marius Edwards (132 lbs.), Joshua Almstrom (145 lbs.), Ben Gallagher (160 lbs.) and Matt Hennig (170 lbs.)
Overall, in the field of 16 teams, Newport placed sixth at Saturday’s meet. Plymouth finished first followed by Bow, White Mountains, Campbell and Pelham.
