Katie Frederick, a former tri-sport athlete at Sunapee High School, was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year and was also awarded Second-Team All-Liberty League and All-Rookie Team honors for Saint Lawrence University Women’s basketball, as announced by league commissioner Tracy King, Tuesday morning.

Frederick ranked first on the Saints’ squad in scoring with 10.2 points and led the league in rebounds with 9.9 per game. She played 639 minutes and totaled 266 points, 257 rebounds, 36 assists, 21 blocks and eight steals.

She recorded eight double-doubles on the season and tallied a season-high 19 points against Williams on November 17th and 20 rebounds against RIT on February 3rd. She was a five time Liberty League Rookie of the Week and four time ECAC Division III North Rookie of the Week selection throughout the season.

“I am so happy for Katie for being selected as the Liberty League’s Rookie of the Year,” said head coach Dan Roiger. “It is an award that she certainly earned by her play this year. All the other freshmen in our league who made contributions to their teams had several players on their team that were the focus of opponents’ defenses. Katie was the focus of all the teams that played us this year, and despite that, she kept answering the call and performing day in and day out and it was fun to watch her progression this season.”

“As a rookie in the beginning of the season she was playing well but didn’t have the skills or experience when teams started attacking her. She gained those skills by studying film and working with our assistant coach, Lauren McRoberts, while bettering her footwork and quickness on post moves. By the end of the season, every team’s goal was to stop her, but she worked even harder to get the ball and added passing and assists to her game. She made some plays this year that just wowed me, and then to think this is just her first year. Throughout it all, she has a great work ethic, a competitive nature and a fun positive attitude. This is just the beginning, she is constantly learning and has a good understanding of what she needs to do this off season to become an even better player.”

Frederick helped the Saints to the Liberty League Tournament for the ninth time in ten years and the Scarlet and Brown finished the season at 17-9 overall and 12-6 in league play.
