A widely attended county meeting of maple sugar makers was held at Kimball Union Academy. K.E. Barraclugh, extension forester at the University of New Hampshire, urged sugar makers to keep cattle out of orchards if they are to get production from young maples which are to replace those past maturity. Dr. Carl Pederson of the Geneva Experiment Station in New York stated that the county has only about one-third the maple sugar and syrup production as in 1860. He credited the decline to the fact that we have other synthetic and cane sugars cheaper in price, which flood the market.

Christy Ambargis, sophomore at Towle High School, is probably the youngest man operating a business in Newport at present. The 18-year-old student ventured into the business world at the age of 13, following the death of his father, who operated the Newport Nu-Way Cleaning Company for 20 years prior to his death. Christy was the only one to continue the business, and he stepped into his father’s position completely green and has kept the business in successful operation for the past five years. His uncle, Christy Stamatio, advised the youth and acts as executor, but Christy actually heads the business, which is owned by his mother, who resides at 38 Green Road.
