Sunapee preps for its 250th celebration on Aug. 17-19

SUNAPEE —The Sunapee Board of Selectmen has approved the weekend of Aug. 17-19, 2018 for the celebration of the Town of Sunapee’s Sestercentennial when it will hold a party for its 250th birthday.

The Sestercentennial Committee has been meeting since October to start the planning. Its website at www.sunapeenh250th.org has recently gone live on-line. The committee appreciates the time and creativity Sharon Thielic provided in making that website happen.

The committee is hoping to finalize the calendar at the March meeting, and has been contacted by several organizations in the community about hosting events in conjunction with the celebration.

The Sestercentennial Committee will be organizing a series of events, to include a parade; a dedication and burying of a time capsule at the Sunapee Archives building, a community photo and a fireworks show.

The Sunapee Recreation Department will be bringing Aerosmith Tribute Band Draw the Line to perform and holding the Wild Goose Chase Race in the Harbor. The Abbott Library will be hosting a day of children’s events. A community breakfast will be hosted by the Lake Sunapee United Methodist Church and another musical event will be held courtesy of Sunapee Cove Assisted Living.

A generous donation has been provided to the committee by Deb Pasculano and her business, Stacy’s Smoothies in Sunapee Harbor, to ensure that the 250th Anniversary fireworks rivals the annual July 4th event. Many other organizations are talking with the committee about being involved in some fashion and the committee is soliciting interest from groups, individuals, organizations/community groups, businesses, etc. who would be interested in hosting a community get together in mid-July to let people know what is being planned.

The group envisions several sites around Sunapee hosting events simultaneously. A member of the Sestercentennial Committee will attend each event and give a presentation about the Sestercentennial Celebration Weekend. It would ask that participants to provide refreshments (snacks, drinks, pot luck supper-up to you) and space for the event. The committee will get the word out. Please consider helping support our efforts to get the community involved in the celebration.

There are still opportunities to purchase sponsorship banners to be hung on utility poles in key locations around Town. he banners will go up in early spring and stay up through the remainder of the celebration year. At the end of the year the banners will be given to the sponsors as a keepsake. Our commemorative license plates, limited edition Sunapee Graniteworks Arrowheads and window decals created by local student Parker Reed are available at the store on the website.

Anyone wanting to get involved or wishing more information can get information on the website or the Facebook page- Sunapee Celebrates its 250th Birthday.ease email us at [email protected] or contact any member of the committee listed on the webpage if you want to participate or have suggestions for events for the celebration in 2018!
