CONCORD — Seven Newport High School seniors were honored at the New Hampshire High School Scholar Athlete Awards March 12 at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord.
They were Keagan Halleck (soccer, wrestling, outdoor track), Hailey Perry (field hockey, softball), Anna Pysz (soccer, basketball, outdoor track), Kennedy Pysz (field hockey, basketball), CJ Howe (soccer, outdoor track), David Stark (football, wrestling) and Cody Turgeon (football, basketball, baseball).
“You should all be proud of your accomplishments,” NHIAA Executive Director Jeffrey Collins said to all the Division III award winners. “It shows your dedication to academics, athletics and your communities.”
Criteria for being selected a New Hampshire Scholar Athlete is a senior with a B plus GPA, active in at least two varsity sports and a positive role model who has participated in community service activities.
“These are some of the finest student/athletes Newport Middle and High School has to offer,” Newport Middle and High School Principal Shannon Martin said. “I look forward to seeing what great things they do as adults.”
The Scholar Athlete Awards program was started in 1987 by the New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Women.
The NHIAA and the New Hampshire Athletic Director’s Association started a similar program for male scholar athletes in 1998. The two ceremonies eventually merged and this school year 1,558 student/athletes in Divisions I, II, III and IV were given awards.
