Nicklos, Kidder III tie for Town Clerk’s job

By ARCHIE MOUNTAIN
NEW LONDON — As of Wednesday afternoon it appeared the winner of the Town Clerk’s position in New London might still be undecided, at least for the time being.

Although it doesn’t happen too often, once in a while there can be a tie and that’s exactly what happened in New London during the annual town election voting on Tuesday.

In a three-way race for the Town Clerk’s post covering the next three years, incumbent Town Clerk Linda K. Nicklos polled 270 votes, as did William F. Kidder III. Barbara Vaughn collected 70 votes.

Contacted Wednesday, Nicklos said there was apparently no set rule on how to break the tie. Later in the day Nicklos and Kidder agreed to flip a coin for the position.

Nickols won the coin toss and said Kidder requested a recount.

Nicklos has served as New London Town Clerk for the past two years, filling the deputy clerk’s post prior to that.

As the Argus-Champion went to press on Wednesday no further information was available. The business session of New London’s annual town meeting was scheduled for Wednesday night.

In other races Janet R. Kidder picked up 547 votes to win a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen; Stephen R. Theroux, treasurer, three years, 560 votes; W. Michael Todd, town moderator, two years, 523 votes; Thomas Ginter, cemetery commissioner, 535 votes; trustee of trust funds, three years, Andrew Hager, 39 write-in votes and Supervisor of the checklist, for six years, Kristin Hubbard, 526 votes.

Elected as Tracy Memorial Library Trustee for three yeas each were Wendy Dumais, 470 votes; Gordon Terwilliger, 454 votes and Eula L. Kozma, 431 votes. Gerald Coogan captured a one-year spot on the budget committee with 248 votes. Trailing were Bruce Hudson, 176 votes and John Raby, 118 votes.

In the six-way race for three openings for three years each on the budget committee the winners were Robert Prohl, 355 votes; Mark Christensen, 227 votes and Lauren S. Chadwick, 271 votes. Also in the race were Tyler Beck, 218, Kim P. Ilg, 188 and Tacee Walker, 131.

All three zoning amendments proposed by the planning board gained voter approval.
