CONCORD — A Vermont-based non-profit organization that advocates reading has donated 3,500 books and other resources to the New Hampshire Department of Corrections Family Connections Center for parents who are incarcerated to help them build good relationships with their children.
Children’s Literacy Foundation donated $39,800, which will allow the Family Connections Center to hold literacy seminars and family literacy celebrations inside the department’s correctional facilities during which the parents and their children can get together and explore the exciting world of reading.
The foundation has partnered with the Family Connections Center for many years by providing books that can be given to children of parent who are in custody as well as to help educate the parents on fun ways to read out loud and interact with their children. Some of those tips include creating interesting character voices and asking children to talk about their understanding of the book.
For 20 years, the center has educated and supported parents in the custody of the Department of Corrections during their separation from children. It operates at all three of the department’s prisons.
