BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. — An expert on treating, managing and avoiding childhood anxiety is scheduled to speak Wednesday at the Bellows Falls Middle School.
The Windham Northeast Supervisory Union is presenting “7 Ways To Stop The Worry Cycle — Strategies For Managing Children With Anxiety In School And Home,” with author and psychotherapist Lynn Lyons, who is based in Concord, New Hampshire.
Lyons is scheduled to speak from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school. The union said parents who attend the event will receive a free copy of the book “Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents” and can participate in follow-up parent engagement workshops at their child’s school.
“Anxiety is all too common and depression rates in children and teens continue to rise,” Lyons said. “We know untreated anxiety in a child is a top predictor of depression in teens and young adults.
“Therefore, understanding how these two problems overlap is valuable information for parents and those who work with children,” the author said.
In the presentation, Lynn focuses on recognizing and interrupting the most common anxiety and depression-enhancing patterns.
She teaches how to adopt a process- based, strategic “umbrella approach” that changes the children and adults entrenched and damaging patterns of thinking and behavior.
The presentation is free and made possible by Title I Parent Engagement funding through Bellows Falls Union High, Bellows Falls Middle, Central Elementary, Grafton Elementary, Saxtons River Elementary and Westminster Center schools.
Child care will be available and no registration is required to attend. For more information, contact union Curriculum Director and Grants Manager, Missy Wilkins at [email protected]
