Missing man found dead in Springfield

Staff Report
SPRINGFIELD — A missing Bellows Falls man was found dead Wednesday morning after a mix-up with medical appointments, according to Springfield Police Chief Doug Johnston.

The 69-year-old man was reported missing around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Country Village Community Care Center in Bellows Falls. Police found the man dead in a culvert at the top parking lot of Springfield Hospital around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Police were told the man thought he had a medical appointment at Springfield Hospital, but his appointment was actually scheduled in Rockingham. After the man realized his error, he left the hospital to go back to Rockingham. He was last seen near a bus at Springfield Hospital, Johnston said.

Police are withholding his name until next of kin is notified.

Police suspected no foul play. Johnston said the man’s medical condition could have been a factor in the death.

The body was transported to the medical examiner’s office in Burlington for an autopsy.

Johnston said autopsy results with a toxicology report could take 6-8 weeks.
