NEWPORT — The Sullivan County Humane Society’s annual Save a Stray 5K fundraising race has moved to Newport this year.

“We had been holding it in Sunapee,” said Laurie Waterman, the society’s treasurer. “We had been holding it Memorial Day weekend, but that hill is a killer. We’re hoping that by moving to a more central location, and it being summertime, we’ll be able to get more runners.”

Waterman said the goal this year is to raise $15,000 for the Tremont Street shelter, which cares for about 50 animals at any given time. She said the race generated about 10,000 last year.

“The money supports our operating fund,” she said. That includes food, shelter, and medical care.

There’s another change for the race this year; for the first time, participants may bring their dogs to walk alongside them. Dogs must be leashed and start at the back of the pack.

The race will convene at 10 a.m. on June 23 at the Corbin Covered Bridge in Newport. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m.; to register online, visit https://pinnaclestrive.com/index.php?n=schs_save_a_stray_5k.

Online registration ends June 22 at 5 p.m.

The pre-registration fee is $20 and the first 100 paid registrants will receive  a free event T-shirt. Children age 12 and under may participate for free. There are prizes for the top male and top female finisher in all age categories, and all participants are eligible for raffle prizes. There will also be a post-race barbecue.

The age groups are 11 & under, 12-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and over.
