I recently came across this important information. In just a few weeks bears will be coming out of hibernation, thus presenting the possibility of bear encounters. The best way to avoid an encounter while walking any of the local trails is to put small bells on your backpack and put peppermint lotion or scent on yourself. Black bears are mostly found in New England, but Grizzly bears can be found further south on the Appalachian Trail. You can tell what type of bear is around if you see its scat or feces. Black bears make a medium pile of poop containing seeds. Grizzly bears poop is different. It is a large pile or heap of poop which smells like mint and sometimes contains small bells.
