GREENFIELD, Mass. — Howard Stearns Blodgett Jr., 90, died early Saturday morning March 24, 2018, peacefully in his sleep at Charlene Manor nursing home in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
Howard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Stella (Zaharias) of Newport, New Hampshire; their two sons, Howard Stearns Blodgett III, “Howie,” of Montague, Massachusetts and wife Jill Bromberg, and Gary Alan Blodgett of Huntington, Vermont and wife Ruth; and his grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Blodgett of Boston, Massachusetts and Jared Blodgett of Burlington, Vermont.
Howard was born May 21, 1927, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Howard Stearns Blodgett and Evander Blodgett (Welch), the second of three children. The family moved to Hardwick, Vermont and later to Claremont, New Hampshire, where Howard attended St. Mary’s High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from World War II, stationed in Washington, D.C., and earned a degree in advertising design from New England School of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts in 1948. After returning to Claremont, Howard started his long career at Joy Manufacturing. He married Stella Zaharias, the sister-in-law of his close friend Al St.Martin (deceased) on Dec. 4, 1954.
Howard was an avid reader and book collector, sharp dresser, Sunday driver, dessert lover, crossword solver, Catholic, artist, veteran, perfectionist, intelligent, handsome, and loving husband, dad, and grandpa.
