Kearsarge Regional High School hosted its first home track and field meet on Tuesday, April 10th, and a handful of local teams participated. Competing at the meet was Newport, Stevens, Sunapee, Fall Mountain, and Kearsarge, among others. It was a chilly day with temperatures around 37 degrees and some slight snowfall at times. A lot of kids were trying to stay warm in-between competing by slipping on sweaters and sweatpants and continuously jogging in place. Some were even competing wearing their sweatshirts or sweatpants to fight the brisk weather. A pair of athletes walked past me during the meet, one saying, “Man, it’s freezing” and the other responding, “I picked a bad day to wear the shortest shorts I’ve ever worn.”
That being said, teams were thankful to finally get a meet under their belts and dip their toes into the water that is the 2018 track and field season. Kearsarge track coach, Edwin Rehor, said, “It was great to get back out there again. We have a lot of eager freshmen and ladies. And it was good to have them get a High School meet in. In the cool weather, we were hoping to get the meet in without any serious injuries.”
Stevens coach Matt Baird-Torney was thankful to get the meet in today, saying, “It was certainly nice to get out and compete today after having several meets already postponed. Not ideal weather for setting personal records but I was very happy with everyone’s effort. We had a couple athletes qualify today and several more knocking on the door.”
For the overall results, Thetford won the boys’ side with a score of 84, followed by Newport (74) and Kearsarge (72.5). Thetford finished first overall for the girls as well (131.16), followed by White Mountains (81.5) and Fall Mountain (43).
