On Friday, April 6, 2018, Dr. Strother B. Marshall passed away at the age of 93 at the Veterans Home in South Paris, Maine. Strother was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1924, the third child in a family of four. His family placed a strong emphasis on education for their children and all attended colleges and graduate schools. Strother attended the Boys Latin School in Baltimore, Williams College in Massachusetts and Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, fulfilling his lifetime ambition to become a doctor.
Upon completing his education and residency programs, earning his right to practice medicine, Strother joined the Air Force in 1950 and served for 10 years, retiring in 1960. Strother then joined a private medical practice in Claremont, where he had a very successful medical career until 1974. Later in his life, he worked in Albany, New York, Great Barrington, Massachusetts and finally for a large hospital in Salt Lake City.
Retiring at the age of 70, Strother moved to central California, where he enjoyed a long and fruitful retirement full of traveling and activity in local community organizations.
In 2013, due to declining health, Strother relocated to Maine to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Ellen Marshall in Bethel.
Strother enjoyed writing and kept up an extensive correspondence with many friends and associates throughout his life. Of his many interests, reading and gardening were certainly at the top.
Strother is survived by his sister, Marion Hooper of Sarasota, Florida; his former wife, Norma Marshall of Saco, Maine; and his two sons, Arthur Marshall of Bethel, Maine and Thomas Marshall of Biddeford Pool, Maine. Strother will also be fondly remembered by his three grandchildren, Sarah Marshall and Bill Marshall of Portland, Maine and Chelsea Marshall of Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as his two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Lucy Marett.
Strother was predeceased by his two older brothers, Edward A. Marshall and J. Howard Marshall.
A Memorial Service in memory of Strother will be held later in the spring at his favorite vacation spot, Biddeford Pool, Maine.
