FOLA Film Series Concludes with “The Graduate” on April 21

LUDLOW— FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium) will present the 1967 classic “The Graduate” as the final film in their Classics of the 60’s film series at 7p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium.

The film, “The Graduate”, is a 1967 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Mike Nichols and written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham, based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Charles Webb, who wrote it shortly after graduating from Williams College. A plot of this classic film follows its protagonist’s transition into adulthood. The film tells the story of 21-year-old Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then falls in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

The storyline follows Benjamin as he spends his summer swimming in the pool during the day and liaisoning with Mrs. Robinson at night. Then, at the insistence of his family and Mr. Robinson, he dates Elaine, Mrs. Robinson’s daughter. He does everything he can to make Elaine unhappy during the date but eventual realizes that he and Elaine share much more in common than he initially realized.

This develops a problem with Mrs. Robinson who insists that Elaine marry a former boyfriend. Benjamin tries to convince Elaine that they should be together. The rest of the film is about the resolution of this problem, ending up with Benjamin interrupting the wedding of Elaine and her ex-boyfriend.

The movie was a critical success as well as a financial one. It also introduced the Simon and Garfunkel song, Mrs. Robinson.

As with all FOLA movies, the film is open to everyone and is free; donations are appreciated. Popcorn will be provided by Berkshire Bank with water offered by FOLA. For more information, call (802) 228-7239 or visit the FOLA web site atwww.fola.us.
