NEWPORT — The Richards Free Library received a present Monday night from the Newport Board of Selectmen.
On a 5-0 vote, selectmen agreed to waive all fees for use of the Newport Opera House by the library to present its 60th Annual Sarah Joseph Hale Award on Oct. 6.
At the meeting, Library Director Andrea Thorpe requested a rate reduction. Two years ago the library paid a janitorial fee of $125 to use the Opera House for the Hale program.
At Monday’s meeting, Selectman John Hooper II quickly made a motion that the library be allowed to use the Opera House for the Hale award program at no charge and without further discussion his request passed.
In the past, 32 of the Hale award presentations have been made in the Opera House and the only time there was a charge was in 2016.
