Early morning rollover crash shuts down I-91

WINDSOR, Vt. — An early morning rollover crash on Interstate 91 resulted in the closure of a portion of Interstate 91 and the arrest of a Brownsville man, according to Vermont State Police.

At 2:22 a.m. Tuesday, state police responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on Interstate 91 northbound in Windsor.

Troopers arrived at the scene and observed what appeared to be a severe motor vehicle crash, which resulted in a 2009 Honda CR-V rolling multiple times, police said.

The crash resulted in the roof of the Honda CR-V being  torn off and personal belongings from inside being scattered approximately 500 feet across the median of Interstate 91.

Vermont State Police were unable to locate anyone from the crash at the scene. But the operator of the CR-V, 31-year-old Joel R. Gouin, was discovered at the Springfield Circle K by members of the Springfield Police Department. Gouin was subsequently taken to Springfield Hospital for a medical evaluation.

Interstate 91 north and southbound lanes were closed. Vermont State Police said both lanes were reopened by 7 a.m.

Further investigation revealed that Gouin was under the influence and was processed for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. He was wearing his seatbelt.

Gouin was released with a criminal citation and is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windsor Criminal Division, at 8 a.m. June 26 to answer to the charges of driving under the influence of drugs, careless and negligent operation, leaving the scene of an accident and false information to law enforcement.
