Bellows Falls has now earned both of their victories in 2018 against Mill River, as they beat the Minutemen 5-2 on Saturday morning behind a complete game on the mound from Spencer Clark.
Clark struck out four and had a three-pitch top of the third to guide the Terriers to a victory in his seven innings. Clark, on his performance, said, “I felt great… it was nice. I felt consistent… you can’t do anything without your teammates.” There were three occasions that Clark hustled to grab foul fly-balls by his home dugout between home and first. On leading by example and hustling to earn his win Saturday, Clark said, “When people hustle together, they work more cooperatively. There’s more that can happen… there’s more good things that happen when we hustle… there’s more opportunities given to the whole team.”
After allowing one run in the top of the first, Clark and the Terriers settled into a groove. In the bottom of the first, Clayton Groenewold hit an RBI-double and was later knocked in by an infield single from Noah Rawling. The Terriers went up 2-1 and didn’t look back. In the fourth, catcher Colton Baldasaro recorded his first career RBI, as his single knocked in Noah Wilkonson. Baldasaro has stepped in and played well for the Terriers behind the plate. Bellows Falls’ head coach, Bob Lockerby, on his freshman catcher, said, “That’s his third game now. He is my young bright light. Each game he has gotten better. I didn’t expect anything with bat and he’s got two hits now and an RBI. He’s handling it well. He’s learning that he’s got to be a little quicker [throwing to second], but I like him. You’re going to be reading about him for the next four years.”
Bellows Falls picked up another run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Jeffery Rainville and another in the sixth on an RBI groundout from McGregor Vancor.
Coach Lockerby, on earning the second win of the year, said, “I like these guys today as much as I did the other day when we were down 14-1. It’s a work in progress. Today was a better ball game. The whole idea is to make the other team beat you instead of beat yourself. Now we got to turn around and head to Rutland on Monday… that’ll be good.”
