Cosmos softball beats Bellows Falls 16-1 in five innings

Springfield- The Springfield girls exploded for 14 runs between the second and fourth inning on Wednesday, and used their hot bats to take down the Terriers of Bellows Falls, 16-1.

After scoring two runs in the first inning, the Cosmos put together four more in the bottom of the second.  Ashley Chamberlain got the scoring started in the second with an RBI-single that knocked in Lizzy Chambers, and Hannah Crosby followed that up with a bases-clearing 3-RBI home run down the left field line to give Springfield a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Springfield would pour on five more runs. Mykahla Jasinski started the scoring off with an RBI-double, and after a Chambers walk to load the bases, freshman Molly Leonard had a bases-clearing 3-RBI triple that soared just over the right fielder’s glove. A Chamberlain groundout then scored Lenoard from third.

In the top of the fourth, Bellows Falls would score their lone-run on an RBI-triple from Paxton Santorelli. In the bottom-half of the inning, Leonard would come through with yet another 3-RBI triple to extend the Cosmo-lead. On his freshman third baseman, Springfield head coach Andy Bladyka, said, “[Molly Leonard] had a three-RBI triple yesterday and she had two of ‘em today. She’s now had three 3-run triples in two days, which is unusual from a freshman.”

After four innings, the Cosmos grew their lead to 16-1. In the top of the fifth, Crosby would strike out the side to clinch the win in five innings. On the pitching he got from Crosby Wednesday, coach Bladyka said, “Hannah threw the ball well today, she was right on it. I think maybe one walk today, and yesterday she only had one walk… and we were able to have back-to-back five-inning games, which is really important to conserve Hannah’s arm.”

The Cosmos improve to 4-3 on the season. On his team’s efforts Wednesday, Bladyka said, “They performed really well. This is the first time this year we’ve played on back-to-back days. It was really nice to see us hitting… we had good swings on good pitches. We put that together today better than we have been… we’re picking the right pitches and swinging on them… a lot of line-drives and hard-hit balls today… up and down the lineup. The toughest part of our schedule was very early this year. We lost three out of four to three very good teams to start the year, and now we’re hoping to get things rolling and today was a step in the right direction.”

Bellows Falls drops to 0-4 on the season and will host Otter Valley on Friday. Springfield travels to Leland and Gray on Monday.
