Springfield unified basketball advances in playoffs

The Cosmos beat Brattleboro 46-45 on Thursday night in a game that had coaches, players, and fans on the edge of their seat. Springfield continues to roll and has advanced to the next round.

Springfield started the game on fire from the field, and after one, they had gotten out to an 18-10 lead thanks to buckets from Jayden Thurber, Lance Robinson, Cameron Colon, Evan Hall and Falisha Maly.

Hall and Colon continued to score for the Cosmos in the second frame, but baskets from Zach Smith and Jacob Williams kept Brattleboro in the game. Before the half-time buzzer, Smith hit a big three-pointer for the Colonels, which brought Brattleboro to within two, 28-26. The game was tied at 34 apiece after a low-scoring third quarter.

The fourth quarter was one that brought much intensity and suspense for those in attendance. At the 3:06 mark in the game, with Brattleboro leading 40-38, Hall hit a clutch three-pointer to give the Cosmos the lead. The Colonels regained the lead, 43-41, but another Hall three with 21.7 seconds remaining would give Springfield the lead again, 44-43. Brattleboro scored once more to grab the lead with 15 seconds left. With just over six seconds left on the clock, Colon scored the game-winning basket for the Cosmos, and gave them their 46-45 advantage. Springfield’s zone-defense locked the Colonels up on the last possession to secure the victory.

On the game, Gavin Glidden, said it is “good playing as a team,” and Jason Supry added, “Everyone worked together. Our team is the best.” Natalie Corliss said, “We have all come so far as a people and as a team.”

For the Cosmos, Paul Dana had nine assists and Gavin Glidden secured seven rebounds. Robinson had four points and three rebounds, Falisha Maly had four points and two rebounds, and Hall and Colon each dropped 18 points.
