Oil spill slows traffic in Springfield

Staff report
SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — An oil spill on River Street reduced traffic to one lane for about three hours on Friday morning and into the early afternoon.

The leak occurred around 10 a.m. when a hydraulic line in a Gurney Brother Construction excavator truck split.

About 25 gallons of hydraulic oil spilled, said Springfield Fire Captain Bay Wheeler.

Gurney Brother employees are hazmat certified and were able to cleanup the oil spill without outside specialists, said Doug Gurney, the co-owner of the company.

Gurney said the 2010 vehicle was on its way back from a spring clean-up job on a snowmobile trail. The hydraulic split occurred due to the age and use of the excavator.

“It just happens,” Gurney said of the spill. “You just try to get after it as quickly as you can.”
