Beginning Feb. 1 and continuing through April 17, AARP Foundation provided free individualized tax assistance and preparation for all, within scope, low to moderate income taxpayers. This was done through the Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, celebrating its 50th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. Since its inception, the program has served more than 50 million taxpayers.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure they know about and understand the latest changes to the U.S. Tax Code.
As my first year in the position of district coordinator comes to an end, I want to issue a well-deserved thank -you to the volunteers and host sites that are part of my district that covers Windsor and a piece of Windham Counties.
I was lucky enough to work with a well-trained and caring group of volunteers. We are held to the highest code of conduct and a strict scope of service. Within these perimeters, from the client facilitators to the local coordinators, every one gave more than 100 percent to help our clients. I am grateful to have each of them.
Our host sites are a huge part in making our program possible. They not only donate space but all costs associated with keeping us warm and enough electricity to operate.
Some of these sites also help by taking calls to set up appointments for us. Some offer meals to the volunteers. Still others have transportation services for our clients. Each special and appreciated. These locations are Ascutney – Martin Memorial Hall and the Union Church; Bellows Falls – Senior Center; Chester – American Legion, Post 67; Hartford – Town Hall; Londonderry- Neighborhood Connections; Springfield – Library; Springfield – Senior Center; and Woodstock – Thompson Senior Center.
Additional thank you to the news media who helped us by printing our request for new volunteers as well as announcing our program; to all the locations throughout the county that allowed us to put up posters that tell about our program and where they can call to make appointments.
To our clients, I want to let you know we all look forward to assisting you during the next tax season.
In closing for those who might be interested in joining our team of volunteers, please contact the Springfield Senior Center.
The executive director, Heather Hall, will be able to pass on your contact information to me or if you know one of our volunteers talk to them.
