Cardinals baseball bounces back with big home win

CLAREMONT- After dropping their last game to Windsor, Stevens baseball picked up a big win Monday night by beating Mascoma Valley, 10-2, to improve to 4-4.

After letting up two runs in the top of the first, Stevens answered right back with two of their own in the bottom-half. Tyler Bonneau had an RBI-double and Brendan Bean knocked in another with a single. Stevens added another in the second inning on an Ethan Johnson RBI sac-fly.

The Cardinal-defense would play strong behind pitcher Derrick Stanhope to keep the Royals at an arm’s length after the first inning. The Cardinals stretched out their lead in the fifth by adding on two more runs. Bonneau had an RBI sac-fly that scored Drew Grenier and another was scored on a passed-ball.

Stevens put the Royals away with a big sixth inning where they scored five runs. In the big offensive inning, Owen Taylor had an RBI single to right field, Bonneau had another RBI on an infield single, and Bean had a 2-RBI single that dropped down the left-field line. Stevens would plate two more to get the lead up to 10-2.

Derrick Stanhope got the win on the mound for the Cardinals on Monday, settling into a groove after the first inning. On his pitcher, Stevens head coach, Paul Silva, said, “I thought Derrick was outstanding on the mound [Monday]. After settling in, he threw fantastic… mixed his pitches up very well and kept them guessing all night… had two pick-offs and deserved the win tonight.”

This is the second game in the last three that the Cardinals have come from behind to grab a win. “I love the way the kids came back from the early deficit,” said Silva. “I thought we had good bats all night against a very good pitcher. Brendan Bean and Aidan Cahill crushed a couple of pitches tonight on their double and triple. I was also very impressed with the way Owen Taylor swung the bat. He is just a freshman playing in just his second varsity game and had a long triple, and a big RBI-single to put us up two runs. He was flawless in the field, as well. I’m very happy for him and it was a very good team win.”

Stevens improves to 4-4 on the season and will travel to Franklin on Thursday to try to repeat Monday;s dominant performance.
