Newport softball stays perfect, picks up road win at Sunapee

SUNAPEE- The Tigers remain undefeated after an 8-1 road-victory over the Sunapee Lakers on Monday.

Newport used a combination of good pitching and a small-ball offense to keep them perfect on the season (5-0). Newport head coach, Sam McNeel, on his team’s performance Monday, said, “We took a little step back in terms of our swings… we were not as good as we were in the last couple games. We played small-ball well and were able to score runs. Right now, we are trying to play to the other team’s weaknesses and [Monday] that was laying down bunts and playing small-ball.”

Newport used 8 hits to score their 8 runs on Monday, and got big offensive performances from Stacia Dame, Alyssa Burr, and Kendall Hamilton, who all had two hits on the day. Hamilton, Burr, and Hailey Perry each had an RBI for the Tigers.

Pitching for Newport was Lacey McNeel, who got the win by throwing all seven innings, striking out 8 and giving up 3 hits and no earned runs. Sam McNeel, on his pitching, said, “Lacey [McNeel] played well [on the mound]. We did a better job of pitching. Although she had the same strikeout numbers… her ball placement was much better that it has been. Sunapee did a good job putting the bat on the ball, and we were able to keep our pitch-count down.”

For Sunapee, their three hits on the day were from Ellie Frederick, Kalleigh Durkee, and Miah Hamm. Durkee scored the lone-run for the Lakers.

Newport improves to 5-0 and hosts Hanover Tuesday. Sunapee falls to 2-3 and travels to Hinsdale on Tuesday.
