Gregory Smith charged with assault on corrections officer

SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield, Vermont man incarcerated for the 2015 death of his former neighbor is facing aggravated assault charges following an alleged assault on a correctional officer.

Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility inmate Gregory A. Smith, 33, a former resident of Springfield, Vermont, is charged with allegedly attempting to “cause serious bodily injury” to a correctional officer at 5:38 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at the facility in Rutland, Vermont.

The correctional officer sustained minor injuries during the altercation, and the incident was reported to the Vermont State Police in Rutland, all according to a VSP press release.

Smith was subsequently transferred to the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Vermont. where he remains incarcerated.

He was issued a citation to appear on June 4 at the Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division, Rutland Unit to answer to the aggravated assault charge.

The Vermont State Police does not release the names of victims of sexual assault or domestic violence.

Smith was convicted earlier this year of voluntary manslaughter in the 2015 shooting death of Wesley Wing in Springfield.
