CLAREMONT — Mark McCray won the Super Street main event Friday, May 11, at Claremont Speedway, moving to the top of the early season points parade with his second top-three outing in as many weeks.
In the Street Stocks, Bryan Town scored his first victory of the season, while Wild Cat ace Josh Rondeau stayed perfect on the season, duplicating his opening night feature win.
Bay State Mini Stocker Nick Anderson was declared the winner of the North East Mini Stock Tour 50-lapper after the apparent winner fell in the tech line. It was the Bay State pilot’s second NEMST feature win.
Mark McCray and Ricky Blu led the Super Streets to the green, with McCray rocketing into the lead as an intense four-car battle for second quickly took form. The first of two lap-five cautions when Ricky Blu, running third, was punted in turn two, ditto for Dylan Bordeaux on the attempted restart.
When lap six went into the book, it was McCray still up front, Joe Brown in the deuce spot, and opening night winner Aaron Fellows – from row five – already up to fourth and knocking on Ben Poland’s door for third. A lap later, Fellows had taken the spot, and on lap eight he was second.
By lap 15, McCray and Fellows had pulled away, with Brown and Craig Smith waging a mighty battle for third far behind them. The race, though, was hardly over. Caution number three waved on lap 21, with Fellows coasting slowly to a stop sans driveshaft.
Fellows’ misfortune moved Smith to second but a late-race caution brought Brown again to his bumper and, as McCray sped off to victory, Brown held the deuce the last trip around to earn the runner-up spot. Newport’s Smith was third, Blu returned from his early-race looper to claim the four-spot, and Bordeaux fired back for fifth.
Bryan Town led all the way in the Street Stock 25-lapper, getting the jump on fellow row-one starter Dave Green slit and then never looking back.
Opening night winner Chris Endearing – firing from row five – took third from Joe Renault on lap nine and then flew low through turn one to claim second on the 20th go-round but, on this night, Bryan Town had everyone covered, taking the checkers far ahead of the speedy Endearing.
Green slit, who’d won his heat race earlier, completed his strong night’s work in third, Renault was steady in fourth, and Sunshine Towner Lenny Silver earned the five-spot.
Former Wild Cat champion Kodiak Sabina, making his first run of the season, led the first two circuits of the four-cylinder feature before mechanical failure sent him looping unassisted in turn two to bring out the 25-rappel’s only caution.
Kyle Currier grabbed the point with Sabina gone, but week-one winner Josh Rondeau was already up to third and took command on lap four, then running out the race to duplicate his victory of six days earlier.
As on opening night, it was 2017 champ Each Lynn taking the checkers second, and Currier earning the three-spot. Rookie Jon Alden notched his first speedway top-five with his fourth-place run, and veteran Chris Davis came home fifth.
The NEMST finish was decided in the tech line. Apparent runner-up Nick Anderson was awarded the win, Cody Leblanc was second, and Desmond Killings was moved up to third.
Next Friday, May 18, Claremont Speedway will hold its annual on-track Fan Appreciation Party, with fans urged to arrive early to participate in the popular event. The Super Streets will square off in the night’s main event, the 52-lap Dean Smith Memorial Race, with a full card of Street Stock and Wild Cat racing scheduled as well.
Post time at the Thrasher Road oval is 7 p.m. and, should it rain, the entire event will be run the following day, Saturday, May 19.
