BELLOWS FALLS — The Puddinghead Club will be having its kick-off discussion gathering at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 at the Rockingham Public Library in Bellows Falls. Benn Grant and Lauria Syria, the organizers, hope that this will be the first in a thought-provoking series of conversations — philosophy with a unique twist.
Each night will be focused on taking on a different fundamental philosophical question, such as morality, free will, or the nature of beauty. The twist is that the goal of the night is not just to explore the question, but to come up with the actual, concrete answer — applied and practical philosophy, if you will.
It’s an audacious and bold plan — but can it work? See for yourself! All are welcome, whether you just want to come to watch and listen or want to roll up your sleeves and dive in! Either way, it’s a great opportunity for some mental stimulation.
The topic for this upcoming gathering is: How do we know that what we think we know isn’t just what we think? In other words, what is the exact difference between opinion, belief, and knowledge? What counts as knowledge — and why? And most of all, can this giant question be answered in a single night?
The meeting is free and open to the public, and you can sign up at either of the two links: www.meetup.com/The-Puddinghead-Club/events/249156392/ or www.facebook.com/events/2860959160634542/
