BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. — RAMParts Presents, in partnership with Exhibition on Screen, brings “Renoir: Revered and Reviled” to the Bellows Falls Opera House at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17.
The 90-minute biography examines what happened when Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), one of the most loved Impressionist painters, decided to change his style of painting.
Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist Parisian paintings. This film is based on the sensational collection of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Curators discuss why he shifted focus and how it created both an enraged and excited public response. Two icons, Picasso and Matisse, were highly influenced by Renoir’s new direction.
In the late 1800s, Renoir developed rheumatoid arthritis and in 1907 he moved to a farm close to the Mediterranean coast. Although his mobility became increasingly limited, he continued to paint and this, in part, required him to change his painting technique. Today, Renoir’s body of work recognizes the key link he played between the old and the new.
Robert McBride, director of RAMP, is expanding arts programming locally in the broadest sense by making it accessible in cost and availability, according to a press release.
