Stevens girls tennis celebrates their two seniors

CLAREMONT- Stevens girls tennis hosted Wilton-Lyndeborough on Thursday evening for their Senior Day game, and although they came away with a loss, 6-3, they were able to honor their two seniors, Mariah Lawrence and Fatima Wain, for their commitment to the program.

Stevens head coach, Karen Cullison, had some uplifting words about her two players leaving to graduation, and even got choked at points when talking of them.

Mariah Lawrence

Coach Cullison, of Lawrence, said, “Mariah is one of a kind. She is exceptionally generous and helpful and kind. She’s a decent student, too. She works hard at it. She’s in different programs… she’s in the peer program… she works well with people and she’s an amazing kid. She does well as a leader.”

Fatima Wain

Cullison, on Wain, said, “Fatima is quite a character. She’s a character on the courts and a character in the classroom as well. She’s a very good kid and she has a good heart… she’s very charismatic. The kids love her. She’s fun like that.”

On what her two seniors brought to the team on the court, Cullison said, “Lots of energy… the kids like to hear their chatter and miss either one of them if they’re missing. They’re always looking for them. They play well together. They’re the number one doubles. They came down in the offseason and practiced on Sundays. They worked really hard in the offseason to get to where they are. I think that speaks a lot to their perseverance and how much they want to do well in the game. We will miss the leadership and the steadfast commitment of Mariah and the levity of Fatima brings to the team.”
