UNITY — Sullivan County has been honored as New Hampshire Landowner of the Year by the State Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Division of Parks and Recreation, New Hampshire Bureau of Trails.
The award was initially presented on Saturday, May 19 in Laconia at a meeting of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association attended by Sullivan County Manager Derek Ferland and Sullivan County Director of Natural Resources Lionel Chute.
The Sullivan County Commissioners were filled in with background information at their meeting Monday in Unity.
“Each year the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails recognizes a landowner for going above and beyond the permissions to have a public snowmobile trail on their property,” said Chris Gamache, New Hampshire Bureau of Trails Chief.
“This year we wanted to recognize Sullivan County for all of the efforts that the County has put forth over the past year to work with the local snowmobile clubs in the County,” Gamache stated.
Chute and Sam Sprague were instrumental in rerouting the New Hampshire Corridor No. 5 trail this past fall when permission on a private parcel was lost.
The Crescent Lake Regional Sno-Riders of which Terry Callum is president, told what you did to help move this valuable trail,” Gamache said.
Coridor No. 5 starts at the Massachusetts state line and continues to the US/Quebec border crossing in Pittsburg.
“Sullivan County owns more than 2,000 acres of land and likes to get people out to use it,” said County Commission Chairman Jeff Barrette.
