CLAREMONT- The Stevens Cardinals lacrosse season came to a close Friday night, as the Pelham Pythons came to Monadnock Park and left with the win, 17-0.
Before the game, Stevens honored their seniors: Alex Baker, Alex Devre, Hunter Durkee, Donovan Putnam, and Nick Stone. They each received flowers and were greeted by family on the field to take pictures and to be recognized for their commitment to the Cardinals program.
The first quarter was hotly contested, with Pelham’s lone goal coming from Midfielder Charlie Katin at the 10:43 mark. From there, the Cardinals defense tightened up. “It was a combination of things,” said Stevens Head Coach Pete Lynch. “We were well rested because we last played Monday. I think they may have overlooked us as well.”
Things fell apart in the second quarter, however. Katin scored again 54 seconds into the period, and things spiraled from there. Four different players for the Pythons would score in the second, making it 8-0 Pelham at the half. “In the first we were in the right positions defensively. We got away from that in the second. We had a lot of mental lapses, and fatigue set in,” said Lynch.
It was more of the same in the third. Pelham’s lone senior Robert Ryan scored two of his four goals on the day in the frame, while Dylan DeFranzo scored two of his three. By the end of the third, the Pythons would lead 13-0, and the clock would hit running time.
Four more goals would be added in the fourth period, and Pelham would take home a 17-0 victory. Pelham finishes their impressive regular season at 12-1.
Although the Cardinals finished winless on the season, there is one thing Coach Lynch remains very proud of. “These last few games we really had fun, we had gotten away from that in the middle of the season. I am glad they found the fun again.”
