Windsor softball opens up postseason with 18-1 win

WINDSOR-  Hannah Wood and Jasmine Frazer both had RBI hits in the first inning as Windsor wasted little time with Northfield on their way to an 18-1 win in the first round of the Vermont softball playoffs.

While Yellow Jackets Carah Rugg pitched a dominating game today (9 strikeouts, 1 walk and 1 hit allowed), the Jackets bats were busy. Windsor added 6 more runs in the second inning as Wood, Kristin Clark and Adi Prior all collected hits and Angel Sutton and Clark picked up RBIs in the inning, giving Windsor an early 8-0 lead. Northfield scratched a run on the scoreboard in the top of the third, but Rugg and her catcher, Prior, didn’t allow anything else for the rest of the day. “We stayed focused all day and Adi did a great job behind the plate today, again,” said Rugg after the game.

Since Windsor’s 1-7 start to the year, they have gone 5-4 with 10 of their 11 losses on the season coming at the hands of either D-II or D-I opponents. “I think we have a whole different team than at the start of the year,” said Windsor first-year head coach Heather Stearns after the game. “With no seniors on the team, today is the first time we have had a home playoff-game for this group and today was a great team effort, from pitching, to hitting, to base running and defense,” added Stearns.

Windsor would add to their lead in the third as 7 more runs crossed the plate. Clark delivered another RBI to highlight the third inning. Windsor capped the night off in the fourth inning, as Brooke McKeen delivered a 2-RBI single to make the final score 18-1.

Wood scored 4 runs on 2 hits and picked up a couple of RBIs, while Clark had 3 RBIs and McKeen added 2 of her own.

Windsor will visit No. 1 Green Mountain (14-1) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
