Local youths reel in prizes at fishing derby

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. — A breeze that kept the bugs at bay made for a fun time and lots of winners at this year’s annual Saxtons River Recreation Fishing Derby on May 5.

Organizer Samantha Fletcher reported a good turnout, with chances to win trophies in three age groups.

Several derby participants earned prizes. Chloe Grant swept the age 4-6 category with first fish caught, biggest fish, most fish caught and overall prize.

Ages 7-10 winner for first, biggest and overall was Braeden Wyman, while Madison Duby took the prize for most fish.

Ages 11-14 overall winner was Mack Ross. First fish and most fish prizes went to Gabriela Beayon, and Remy LaCroix caught the biggest fish.

Derby participants Joshua Dupuis and Carter Fisher won additional prizes.

Volunteers who helped with registration and measuring fish included Sherri Arvin Mallan, Denise Randall, Tara Lloyd-Darrell, Clayton Groenewold and Steven Beayon.

The trophies were sponsored by Quinn Property Services, and J & H Sporting Goods donated the prizes. The Saxtons River Village Market supplied the coffee, and Best Septic provided port-a-potties.
