NEWPORT – The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has awarded a $12,500 grant to support the New Hampshire Humanities Connections adult literacy program.

Last year New Hampshire Humanities sponsored 438 free programs reaching 145,407 residents in 153 communities in partnership with 287 organizations. Upcoming programs are scheduled for June and July in Newport, New London, Newbury and Washington.

Connections works in partnership with adult basic education and ESOL classes, prisons, and refugee resettlement organizations, all according to a press release from New Hampshire Humanities. The program brings together the best of children’s and young adult literature and New Hampshire Humanities-trained discussion facilitators to promote English language skills, a culture of reading, and family literacy.

“Connections is an example of New Hampshire Humanities identifying a real need, rallying partners around it, and coming up with a real solution,” said Ken Sheldon, New Hampshire state president of Bank of America, who presented the check to New Hampshire Humanities on May 25.

For more than 500 longtime citizens and new Americans, the Connections program links adult students to the world through literature and other print media, promotes thinking and discussion, builds confidence, supports whole family learning, and helps create a foundation for economic opportunity.

For more than 40 years, New Hampshire Humanities has provided the people of the Granite State with opportunities to cultivate curiosity, connect across cultures, examine beliefs, practice civility, strengthen community bonds, and engage in civic life, according to the press release.

“Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s support is critical to helping us connect new Americans and native English speakers with expanded opportunities in the community and in the workplace,” said Anthony Poore, Executive Director of New Hampshire Humanities. “We’re deeply grateful to the Bank of America Charitable Foundation for its support of Connections since 2011, and lifelong learners of all kinds since 1989. Bank of America’s support has, and will, continue to change many lives for the better through their support of New Hampshire Humanities’ Connections program.”
